Uzupis District Guide
A Republic of Art and Freedom: Discovering the Bohemian Spirit of Užupis Guide
Užupis, meaning "beyond the river," is a self-declared republic within Vilnius, known for its bohemian atmosphere, artistic spirit, and quirky independence. Crossing the bridge into Užupis feels like entering a different world, a place where creativity and freedom reign supreme. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique and unconventional experience. Užupis was once a neglected and dilapidated area, but in the 1990s, artists and intellectuals began to move in, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub. On April 1st, 1997, Užupis declared itself an independent republic, complete with its own constitution, president, prime minister, and even an army (of 12). While the declaration is largely symbolic, it reflects the district's commitment to freedom of expression and artistic innovation. Explore the streets of Užupis and discover its many art galleries, studios, and workshops. Visit the Užupis Constitution, displayed on plaques in multiple languages, which includes articles such as "Everyone has the right to be happy" and "Everyone has the right to celebrate or not celebrate their birthday." Cross the bridge adorned with love locks, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the cafes and restaurants along the Vilnelė River. Don't miss the Užupis Angel statue, a symbol of the district's freedom and creativity.
